Location

Karuizawa Wild Bird Park

Karuizawa is, with the foothills of Mt. Fuji and Oku-nikko, one of the three most important reservations for wild birds in Japan. It is worthy of being called a bird paradise. There are about 120 – 130 species of birds inhabiting this area. These richly verdant heights are a nationally-designated conservation area for wild birds and a model area of the Wild Bird Society of Japan. In particular, the Hoshino zone is one the very few Bird Forests established by the Ministry of the Environment nationwide. A 2.4 km long bird watching trail runs through this approx. 100 hectare forest of larches and red pines. Near the stream there are bird-watching huts in two locations on the ridge, and there are feeding tree areas on the bird-watching course, as well as feed boxes and nesting boxes. This is a valuable natural environment where we can come into contact with the modes of life of wild birds that we do not normally witness.
